Global Trade Idea: Constellation Energy Corporation (CEG US) - BUY

Peet Serfontein & Khumbulani Kunene

We enter a long position with a target price of $474.00 and a stop-loss of $310.00.

Constellation Energy Corporation is a leading American energy provider specialising in carbon-free power generation, nuclear energy operations and large-scale clean-energy solutions for commercial, industrial and residential customers. Constellation Energy serves homes, institutional customers, public sectors, community aggregations, and businesses in the United States.

The company is set to continue benefitting from strong growth in AI as it can provide carbon-free base power (nuclear) to satisfy the high energy demands of the data centres required to support the thematic.

Technically, the price is in the Accumulation phase of the Wyckoff Price Cycle (see the insert on the main chart). In this phase, smart money and institutional investors are entering positions and are quietly absorbing supply from weaker holders. This phase reflects a transition from distribution-driven weakness to demand-driven stability.

Stepwise support also lends bullish support to the stock (see the black trendlines marked with Step one and two on the chart). This pattern highlights a market that is consistently forming higher support levels after each pullback, indicating that buyers are stepping in earlier than before.

The MACD histogram appears to have reached a downside trough, and the recent volatile upward-sloping trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator also supports our bullish view.

Buy/Sell Rationale:

Technical Analysis:

    • The lower panel shows occurrences of the Japanese Doji Morning Star candlestick pattern. A reading of one indicates when such a pattern occurred. This is a three-candle bullish reversal pattern that typically forms after a period of weakness. It starts with a strong bearish candle, followed by a Doji that signals indecision as selling pressure fades and concludes with a solid bullish candle that confirms a shift toward buying interest (see the insert).
    • Our recommended entry range is $340.00 to $360.00, or as close as possible to $354.11 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is $474.00, representing ~33.9% upside from current levels.
    • According to forward calculations of the Relative Strength Index indicator, the stock will be overbought at $475.00, making our profit target realistic.
    • Our proposed time to exit is end of March 2026, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below $310, or 12.5% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals, and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above $360.00.

Fundamental view:

    • Constellation Energy Corporation operated through five segments, spread geographically across the US.
    • The business serves a wide range of customers, including approximately two million residential, public sector, and business customers. Their major clients include large corporations and data centres.
    • Growth in AI is driving demand for clean energy solutions. Constellation has already secured long-term agreements with hyper-scalers Microsoft and Meta for its nuclear plants.
    • The company's generation fleet has over 32 400 megawatts of capacity, nearly 90% of which is carbon-free, primarily through its large nuclear fleet, along with hydro, wind, and solar resources.
    • Constellation is a leading advocate for clean energy and has set a goal to eliminate 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
    • The acquisition of Calpine is set to close in 4Q25 and is expected to be earnings and free cash flow accretive. It will add to Constellation's portfolio diversification as Calpine primarily plays in the natural gas and geothermal space.
    • In 3Q25, the company saw adjusted earnings per share increase 11.0% to $3.04 and revenue was steady at $6.56 billion. Revenue was ahead of expectations, while earnings missed market consensus due to higher operating costs. Full-year guidance was narrowed towards the upper end of previous guidance.
    • From a risk perspective, the company is exposed to operational and safety challenges, particularly with the nuclear power plants, which requires the highest level of safety. An unplanned reactor shutdown, a technical failure, or a significant incident could lead to direct losses, high repair costs, and severe reputational damage. Current policy around clean energy may have a temporarily negative impact on the company.
