Local Trade Idea - Quilter (QLT) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Motheo Tlhagale

We initiate a long position with a target price of R44.00 and recommend a stop-loss at R37.00.

Quilter is a United Kingdom (UK)-based wealth manager offering advice-led investment solutions, financial planning and a broad investment platform for pensions, savings and individual savings accounts (ISAs). Its model provides flexibility for advisers and clients through integrated advice, discretionary management and multi-asset portfolios. Headquartered in London and listed on both the London and Johannesburg Stock Exchanges, the group manages significant assets for hundreds of thousands of affluent and high-net-worth clients.

Technically, the upward-sloping linear regression channel supports a constructive outlook, with the recent pullback bringing Quilter closer to channel support, an area that has previously attracted buying interest (see the insert on the main chart). If support holds, the share could recover towards the channel midpoint and upper boundary, although a break below support would weaken the bullish case.

The Elliott Wave structure also supports the trade idea, as the share appears to be in the early stages of a potential Wave B rebound following a corrective Wave A decline. Under Elliott Wave theory, Wave B typically represents a temporary recovery within a broader correction and can offer meaningful upside if buying momentum improves. While the current setup suggests scope for a rebound, confirmation remains dependent on subsequent price action and the share's ability to sustain higher levels.

The share remains just below its 200-day simple moving average (SMA) at R40.60, which continues to act as a key resistance level. However, its ability to trade close to this level suggests that selling pressure may be easing as buyers absorb available supply. A decisive break above the 200-day SMA would improve the technical outlook and could signal a shift in momentum, with the level potentially transitioning from resistance into support.

Buy/sell rationale

Technical analysis:

    • The recent widening of the Bollinger Bandwidth indicates that volatility is increasing after a period of relative calm. With the share trading near the lower Bollinger Band, any recovery from current levels could support a bullish outlook, particularly if the price moves back above the middle band and momentum improves. However, as Bollinger Bandwidth measures volatility rather than direction, continued price weakness alongside expanding bandwidth would instead signal increasing downside risk.
    • The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram suggests that downside momentum may have reached an extreme, indicating that selling pressure could be approaching exhaustion. This supports the trade idea, as any contraction in the histogram from these negative levels would signal improving momentum and the potential for price stabilisation. However, confirmation of a more meaningful recovery would require further improvement in the indicator and supportive price action.
    • The gradual upward trajectory of the On-Balance Volume (OBV) indicator supports a positive view of the share, as it suggests that buying volume has generally outweighed selling volume over time. This rising trend points to steady accumulation and underlying investor demand, reinforcing the bullish case. Continued gains in OBV alongside higher share prices would provide further confirmation that the advance is supported by healthy market participation.
    • Our entry range is between R38.30 to R40.60 with an upside target set at R44.00 (+13.6% from current levels).
    • A price below R37.00 (-4.5% from current levels) is a major concern for downside potential and is recommended as a stop-loss.
    • Time to exit is late November 2026. Keep the option open to close the trade if the price reaches our profit target in a shorter time.

Long-term fundamental view:

    • Quilter holds a secondary listing on the JSE but operates primarily in the UK, where it enjoys market-leading positions across the advice, platform and solutions markets.
    • Quilter delivered a strong 1H26 performance, with adjusted diluted earnings per share increasing 13% to 6.1 pence, while assets under management and administration (AuMA) increased 11% to £157 billion, supported by strong net inflows and favourable market movements.
    • Net inflow momentum remained particularly robust, with core net inflows increasing 32% year-on-year (y/y) to £6.0 billion, equivalent to 9% of opening AuMA on an annualised basis, highlighting the strength of the group's client proposition.
    • The Quilter Investment Platform continues to gain scale, with platform assets under administration increasing 13% to £117.9 billion, reinforcing its position as one of the UK's leading advised investment platforms.
    • Despite ongoing investment in growth initiatives and technology, management maintained a healthy operating margin of 30%, demonstrating the scalability and operating leverage inherent in the business model.
    • We like the UK exposure, where the continued shift from defined benefit to defined contribution pension schemes is driving greater demand for financial advice as retirement planning responsibility moves from employers to individuals.
    • For South African investors, Quilter provides attractive hard-currency exposure, with 100% of earnings generated offshore, making it a useful rand hedge within a diversified portfolio.
    • Risks to our fundamental view include economic weakness in the UK, market volatility affecting AuMA and net inflows, intense competition within the wealth management industry, fee pressure, and ongoing regulatory risk.
